The first known fireworks date all the way back to 9th century medieval China, where they were used to celebrate all kinds of festivities.

They will have been quite different from the fireworks we have these days though – fireworks weren’t even produced in Europe until the 14th century, and it wasn’t until much later, in the 1830’s, that coloured fireworks were introduced.

But the modern skyrocket-style fireworks we all know and love today are a modern invention. Here’s some of the best public displays you can see for FREE this year across the UK:
